Hiking

Ikaria is an outstanding island for lovers of nature, hiking and exploring incredible natural landscapes and sights.

There are numerous exceptional hiking trails across the island, among which I single out two – the Chalari Canyon and the trail to the top of Mount Atheras.

Chalari Canyon

Ikaria – Chalari Canyon

Chalari is one of the best and most challenging hiking trails in Greece! A true paradise for lovers of untouched nature and adrenaline!

The spectacular trail passes through unreal wild landscapes surrounded by impressive high mountains and dense pine forests.

After descending to the small river that flows through the canyon, the trail continues with a more demanding section upstream along the river.

The trail passes along fascinating rock formations and small natural pools created by the river’s flow.

In one section, the trail passes along a steep cliff above the river with stunning view of the imposing wild mountains.

The trail then splits – The left branch leads through the most difficult and demanding part, where ropes and height add the final touch to this adrenaline-filled challenge.

The unique scenic setting, the scent of the forest, and adrenaline from hiking create an unforgettable experience that will be remembered for a lifetime!

🏔️ Mount Atheras Top

A great hiking trail leads to the roof of Ikaria and the top of Mount Atheras in the southwest of the island.

One of the starting points is near the lake by the village of Pezi, about 6 km from the village of Christos Raches. There is also another starting point after the village of Pezi towards the Agios Isidoros church which I did not pass.

An asphalt road leads through fascinating natural landscapes and dense pine forest to the first starting point and Lake Pezi. Along the way, you will also encounter the beautiful Profitis Ilias church.

Just before the lake, there is a turnoff from the main road where a dirt road leads toward the summit.

From here the mountain trail begins, winding through wild landscapes with interesting rock formations and occasional vegetation. The trail is marked, but caution is advised, as it is easy to lose your way.

On the roof of Mount Atheras there are several peaks where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the vertical steep cliffs and the endless blue of the sea. The breathtaking wild landscape is adorned with impressive rock formations.

Staying at the top is an incredible experience that leaves you breathless!

Exploring the Area

Raches

An impressive mountain region located on the western part of the island, about 6 km from the tourist spot of Armenistis.

It is characterized by an exceptional natural landscape with lush vegetation and several traditional villages, among which the largest one, Christos Raches, stands out.

Christos Raches

An authentic and picturesque village known for its laid-back atmosphere and unique rhythm of life. It is famous for its unusual nightlife, as shops and cafés stay open late into the night, which is completely opposite to typical Greek habits and makes it truly unique on the entire island.

At the heart of the village lies a stone-paved square with a beautiful church, as well as numerous charming tavernas and cafés where you can taste excellent local food and enjoy captivating ambience.

The unique, relaxing atmosphere and the tranquil, slow pace of life will enchant you at first sight! A place that easily steals the heart of every visitor.

Agios Dimitrios

Nearby lies this small traditional village, set on fertile land with abundant vegetation and various crops.

The central part of the village is adorned by a picturesque paved square and a couple of tavernas offering excellent local dishes.

On the way from village of Christos Raches to Agios Dimitrios, you will pass a delightful little church nestled in the greenery, perfectly capturing the wonderful spirit of Ikaria.

Monastery Evangelismos Mounte

When heading from the village of Christos Raches toward the monastery, the road leads through lush vegetation, passes by the village of Kastanes, and then reaches a dam with a lake.

After about 4.5 km from Christos Raches, you reach the beautiful Evangelismos Mounte monastery.

The sanctuary is nestled in an exceptional natural setting, on the mountain slopes covered with dense forest and radiating complete peace. From here, you can enjoy a delightful view of the surrounding landscape.

At this site, the renowned Greek composer, artist and great humanist Mikis Theodorakis was imprisoned during the period of the military junta, giving the monastery a special significance and symbolic weight.

While soaking in the beauty of the divine ambiance, the mysticism of the monastery spreads a calming effect on the soul. Here inspiration comes naturally, and visitors spontaneously stop to reflect on essential human values and freedom.

Osia Theoktisti Monastery & Theoskepasti church

Located between the villages of Armenistis and Evdilos in the north of the island, hidden on a mountain in the heart of dense pine forests, the Osia Theoktisti monastery radiates a sense of peace and serenity rarely found anywhere.

Surrounded by hiking trails winding through lush greenery imbued with the scents of forest and resin, the monastery seems to float outside of time.

The greatest surprise awaits visitors just a few minutes’ walk above the monastery – the small stone Church of Theoskepasti, unusual and unique, partially carved into a large rock that serves as its natural roof.

The authentic ambience is utterly magical: the shadows of the pine trees, the coolness of the stone and the silence leave a strong impression of spirituality and mystery.

A place where nature and sanctuary breathe together, creating a space that inspires, calms, and remains in the heart of every visitor.

Along the road from Armenistis to the Monastery of Osia Theoktisti, in the shade of the greenery, stands the small Ekklesaki Church, exuding quiet beauty.

Koskina Castro

Koskina Castro is an impressive landmark located in the central part of the island, about 10 km from Evdilos port.

The site is reached via the main road, which winds through scenic mountain landscapes with lush greenery, passing by traditional villages, notably Akamatra and Dafni.

Akamatra

A picturesque traditional village set on a forested mountain slope, featuring a lovely paved square with charming tavernas and local shops.

It is worth strolling through the quiet streets of the village, absorbing the beauty of the ambience, and feeling the spirit of the past that still lives here.

Dafni

Situated on a mountain slope and surrounded by lush vegetation, this traditional village exudes the authentic appearance and spirit of Ikaria.

The road continues through a few smaller villages, and Koskina Castro is reached by turning off the main road just after the village of Kosikia.

From there, an unpaved road of about 1.5 km leads to the fortress, followed by a walk to the site.

The impressive fortress rises atop a steep mountain, overlooking the surrounding landscape, with massive stone walls that have withstood the test of time, exuding history and a sense of power.

Walking along its narrow stone paths, it is easy to imagine the lives of the guardians who once protected the population from pirate and enemy attacks.

The fortress offers a phenomenal panoramic view of the surrounding mountain landscape, green valleys and the endless blue of the Aegean Sea in the distance.

The magnificent and inspiring ambience of the fortress, where history seamlessly merges with nature, leaves a strong and lasting impression.
