Kos

🎬 Multicultural Kos

📍 Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese and the second most popular island after Rhodes. It has an international airport and excellent boat connections with Athens and neighboring islands.

Kos also known as “Hippocrates Island” is an island with a rich history, impressive historical monuments, interesting places, great beaches, lush vegetation and enchanting natural landscapes!

▪️ The configuration of the terrain and the numerous cycling paths in the capital city and its surroundings provide the opportunity to tour and explore the locations by bike! Kos has the most cycling paths on the Greek islands.

▪️ Inhabited since ancient times, the island’s long history dates back to the Neolithic. During the Hellenistic era, Kos flourished, as evidenced by numerous landmarks.

▪️ Kos is an island of exceptional history and culture that is reflected in the architecture of several historical eras. Influence of ancient Hellenistic architecture, Romanesque, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, Italian and modern Greek architecture.

Multicultural town Kos

Kos is a large and modern town with about 16.000 inhabitants located on the northeast side of the island. In addition to modern buildings, the pearl of the town are numerous historical locations that look like an outdoor museum.

It should be enjoyed by walking a wonderful promenade along the port surrounded by palm trees, or ride a bike and explore numerous beautiful locations in the town and the surroundings.

Numerous ancient and medieval sights speak about the famous past of island: Medieval castle, Hippocratec Square, Ancient Agora, Roman Odeon…

At the port entrance is dominated the medieval castle of Neratzia, which were built by the knights of St. John in the 14th century on the ruins of an ancient castle. Strong walls surround four circular towers in each corner. In the yard there are remains of ruins from ancient period.

The medieval bridge connects the castle with the Platanos Square, where there is a 2500 years old Hippocrates plane tree, where “Father of Medicine” taught lectures to students. In addition there is 19th century Loggia Mosque from the 18th century, built from the remains of ancient buildings.

Nearby there is an Governor’s Mansion from the period of Italian rule, as well as Elefterias Square in the town center with buildings from the same period – Municipal market and an Archaeological Museum, as well as a beautiful Agia Paraskevi church.

Then follows an imposing ancient agora that was the largest in ancient times. Other monuments of Hellenistic and Roman period should also be visited – Hellenistic temple, Dionysos altar, Sanctuary, Hippodrome, Roman Odeon & Baths, Casa Romana…

Asklipieio

One of the most important locations is impressive Asklipieio, which that is about 4km away from the town. The famous ancient healing temple was built in the 4th century BC, after the death of Hippocrates.

The exceptional location surrounded by greenery that you need to visit and experience famous Hellenistic Period!

Zia & Mount Dikeos

Zia is a picturesque mountain village with traditional houses and incredible view. It is located 13 km from the capital at the foot of the highest Mount Dikeos and is surrounded by wonderful greenery.

From the village of Zia there is a mountain path that goes through incredible nature to the Kos highest peak of Oros Dikeos at 843m.

From there there is a spectacular panoramic view that leaves you breathless on whole Kos and the surrounding islands of Pserimos and Kalymnos!

At the top there is a small church of Dikeos Hristos built in 1079. One of the highlights of Kos, especially for nature and hiking lovers!

Terma

You should visit the beautiful Terma beach, which has thermal springs. It is located 12 km south of the Kos capital, near the place of Agios Fokas.

Terma is a great pebble beach surrounded by high steep cliffs that rise above the beach. The thermal springs are located in a natural pool surrounded by stones which temperature reaches 50 degrees.

The real pleasure is enjoying in the warm water while observing the extraordinary surrounding landscape! The beach is also excellent for diving because of the rich underwater world. 

Tigaki

Tigaki is a tourist resort and one of the most popular locations on the island with a long sandy beach with white sand and turquoise sea.

It is located 13 km west of the capital and can be easily visited by bicycle, as most of the road has a cycling path that runs along the flat terrain along the sea. Nearby is the Aliki salt lake, which is a habitat for numerous birds…

Antimachia

Antimachia is a place located in the central part of the island near the airport. Nearby is an imposing medieval castle with strong walls from the 15th century. Inside the walls are the remains of 2 churches – Agios Nikolaos and Agia Paraskevi.

The Antimachia castle offers a wonderful view on Kardamena and the sea. At a distance of 6 km from Antimachia is the famous tourist village of Kardamena with numerous hotels and tourist facilities.

Kefalos

Kefalos is a place located all the way to west of the island and is the ancient capital of Kos.

Near it is the Kampos place and the remains of the Agios Stefanos Basilica from the 5th century right next to the Agios Stefanos beach with a wonderful view on the small Kastri island.

The surroundings of Kefalos have the most beautiful beaches on Kos. My recommendation is to spend at least one day and enjoy in the incredible and most beautiful beaches and exceptional nature!

Paradisos beach

Paradisos is the most beautiful beach on Kos, located on the Kefalos peninsula, 50 km southwest of the capital.

The true pearl of Kos is a magnificent long sandy beach with golden-yellow sand and turquoise shallow water. A great choice for nature lovers because of the amazing surroundings!

Kos is a big island and the real jewel is the numerous brilliant and enchanting beaches. Various beaches for everyone’s taste.

Sandy beaches of all characteristics dominate, but also pebble beaches. Cosmopolitan and very visited beaches with tourist facilities, but also natural and secluded beaches.
