During the battle, the God Poseidon pursued the Giant Polivotis to Kos, cut off a piece of the island and threw it at the Giant, sinking him to the bottom of the Aegean Sea for eternity. The legendary rock that sank the giant is Nisyros. Every volcanic activity is the angry breath of a defeated Giant from the bottom of the sea…

Mandraki
Mandraki is the Nisyros capital and port. A beautiful place with picturesque white and coloured two-storey houses made of volcanic rocks. Charming squares and narrow cobblestoned streets decorated with amazing mosaics and lovely flowers.
Mandraki may not be the most beautiful place in Greece, but I would like to say a few words about how I experienced Mandraki, and Nisyros too! Irresistible charm, unique style and tradition at every step! A place that grows close to your heart and makes you feel at home!
Mandraki is not made up and arranged like some other towns, but that authenticity and imperfection gives it a special taste that you fall in love immediately! Some places are not meant to glitter and shine, but to exude special aromas of authenticity and originality!
The part by the sea reminds of Little Venice on Mykonos! They have in common that are special and exceptional locations with an irresistible charm that amaze visitors at first sight.
The part of the town called Castro stands out, the Venetian fortress located on the hill above the place where the famous Panagia Spiliani Monastery is placed. The monastery from the 14th century is one of the most important sights of the island with an remarkable iconostasis and a miraculous icon.
Ilikiomeni square is particularly picturesque, where there are traditional taverns surrounded by a charming ambience and with delicious food that is a paradise for the palate…
On the hill above Mandraki are the remains of the ancient acropolis of Palaiokastro with its impressive Cyclopean walls. The strong walls from the 4th century BC are still in very good condition due to the quality construction of the hardest local rocks. From where there is a wonderful view on Mandraki and the surrounding islands!
Nikia
The real pearl is the stately traditional village of Nikia, which is built at a height of 400m on the top of the caldera above the volcano. Beautiful narrow winding streets and charming traditional houses with brightly colored doors and windows create an idyllic picture.
The famous picturesque ellipsoidal square “Porta” of unique architecture and paved with fine black pebbles whose mosaic creates real perfection stands out. The square is home to the beautiful Eisodia Theotokou Church.
From the direction of Nikia, there is a magnificent view on the Lakki plateau, where is an impressive volcano with craters, and on Mount Protitis Ilias!
On the top of the hill next to Nikia is the adorable little church of Profitis Ilias. From where is the stunning panoramic view of Nikia and the whole island that leaves you breathless due to its beauty!
In the immediate vicinity on the slope of the mountain is the gorgeous church of Agios Ioannis Theologos carved into the rock and surrounded by beautiful nature and greenery!
Nisyros Volcano 🌋
The most important attraction of Nisyros is a visit to the volcano located on the Lakki plateau. Magnificent volcano is of unique natural beauty and the youngest active volcano in Greece!
There are 10 craters and of which the largest crater Stefanos stand out. The impressive crater has an elliptic shape with dimensions of 350x280m and a maximum depth of 27m and is considered one of the largest hydro-thermal craters in the world!
The spectacular view from the top of the caldera on the imposing volcano and the Lakki plateau leaves you breathless!
Of the other craters, Megalos and Mikros Polyvotis stand out, which are not allowed to enter.
Paloi
Paloi is a small fishing village located 4 km from the Mandraki capital. A picturesque tourist spot with a marina for yachts and ships and a beautiful beach with trees in the background.
Nisyros beaches
Nisyros has interesting and specific volcanic sandy and pebbled beaches with beautiful landscapes and clear water.
Natural beaches with dark sand and pebbles are ideal for lovers of pristine nature and landscapes.

Pachia Ammos beach
Pachia Ammos is the most beautiful beach on Nisyros, located 10 km from the Mandraki capital. A great sandy beach with beautiful scenery and crystal clear water. An excellent choice for lovers of untouched nature and environment.
Moulari beach
Moulari is a beautiful sandy beach with small pebbles and scattered stones all over the beach and a beautiful natural environment.
Chochaki beach
A unique beach with black stones and a stunning landscape with volcanic rock formations in the background.
