The famous church Panagia Ekatontapiliani
The famous church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani – Church of the Virgin Mary with 100 doors. It is located in the main town of Parikia on Paros. This preserved historic early Byzantine church complex contains a main chapel surrounded by 2 other chapels and a baptistery.
It is one of the most important and oldest Christian buildings in Greece. The name Ekatontapiliani – One-Hundred-Doors comes from the 16th century, according to legend, due to the existence of 99 gates (passages) and the 100th which is secret and is located in church Agia Sophia.
The original building of the church was the work of the Byzantine emperor Constantine the Great, who fulfilled the wish of his mother St. Jelena by building it in the 4th century. During the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, it was rebuilt and a half-domed roof was added. Today’s appearance is a mixture of early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine architectural elements that have been added.
Traditional Lefkes
Lefkes is a picturesque mountain village located in the interior of Paros, 11 km from Parikia!
