Mystical and Sacred Chora
Chora is a mystical and sacred medieval settlement perched on top of a hill around the impressive fortress of the Monastery of Saint John, which dominates the island’s landscape and fills the place with powerful spiritual energy.
The capital of Patmos is an exceptionally well-preserved settlement built in the 12th century and represents one of the most important religious and historical sites in the Aegean, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
The sight of the whitewashed village, crowned by the monumental monastery fortress, amazes visitors from the very first encounter! The lush pine forest that stretches down the slope toward Skala port adds special beauty to this unique setting, creating a harmony between nature, spirituality and architecture.

The authentic architecture of Chora enchants with narrow winding cobbled streets, white houses adorned with colorful windows, unusual arches, and numerous churches decorated with luxuriant bougainvillea and flowers. This fairytale-like setting feels like an open-air museum and offers a true journey back in time.
A visit to Chora is an invitation to slow down. One should enjoy the serene ambiance, absorb the unique atmosphere, visit exceptional religious sites and surrender to the spiritual energy that calms and inspires. Chora doesn’t conquer loudly, it captivates quietly.
Charming tavernas and cafés are scattered throughout the village, perfectly blending into the idyllic setting and offering a pleasant rest after wandering the streets and exploring the landmarks.
Nearby atop the hill, three picturesque windmills offer a phenomenal panoramic view of the Chora and Patmos landscape. A view that calms, inspires, and remains in memory forever.

Monastery of Saint John
The most important religious and cultural center of Patmos is the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which is located on the hill above Chora.
The monastery was founded in 1088 by Saint Christodoulos after a donation by the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos.
It is protected by high walls and towers and looks like a fortress and is visible from every part of the island.
The monastery has an impressive gate that is reached by a decorated stone path. At the entrance you can see nicely decorated yard with a well with Holy water.
An arch with 4 curves on the east side of the monastery dominates the space and has numerous frescoes that symbolize the miracles performed by Saint John the Theologian.
The most important sights of the monastery are the museum and library founded by Saint Christodoulos. The library contains 2000 volumes, 13000 historical documents and 900 manuscripts. The museum contains valuable objects, exceptional icons, Holy relics, ecclesiastical accessories, clothes with silver and gold threads and decorated precious stones.

Beyond the impressive Monastery of Saint John, Chora is home to some of the island’s most important sites, such as the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, the churches of Ipanastasis and Panagia Diasozousa, as well as the nearby monastery of Evangelismos and Agios Amfilohios.
Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi
It is located in the main town of Chora, in a peaceful setting, just a few minutes’ walk through narrow alleys from the famous Monastery of Saint John.
It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Zoodochos Pigi, meaning “The Life-Giving Spring,” and represents an important spiritual center for the local nuns and pilgrims on Patmos.
The small monastery has a lovely ambience decorated with flowers, that radiates a calm and spiritual atmosphere, suitable for prayer and meditation.
The monastery is known for its long monastic tradition and the preservation of spiritual heritage, making a visit a valuable experience for every pilgrim.
It is especially famous for the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary with three eyes, dating from 1763. The icon originally had two eyes, but the appearance of the third eye is linked to an amazing story shared with me by the head nun. The icon disappeared for three days in 1955 and then reappeared transformed, with three eyes! At the same time, a seriously ill child bearing the same name as the Virgin Mary suddenly healed, after the fervent prayers of her mother. A powerful testimony of a miracle and the incredible strength of faith.

It is located on a hillside, halfway between the port of Skala and the main town at the top of the hill. From this spot, there is a lovely view of the port of Skala and the surrounding greenery.
Nestled in lush nature, the cave radiates a mystical and spiritual atmosphere that leaves no visitor untouched.
According to Christian tradition, it was here that Saint John the Theologian (Agios Ioannis Theologos) received the revelation from Jesus Christ, inspiring him to write the last book of the New Testament – the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse).
The sacred cave is imbued with a special spiritual energy, and the ascetic setting in which Saint John lived deeply moves visitors and leaves an unforgettable impression.
Saint Christodoulos transformed this miraculous cave into a place of worship in the 11th century, and a chapel was built in the 17th century. Today, it forms part of a larger religious complex that has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999.
A visit to the holy cave represents a deeply devout and spiritual experience, as well as a unique encounter with the heritage of the early Christian world.
