Rhodes – Old Town

Rhodes Old Town

Rhodes is an island with an impressive history, which is reflected in the imposing medieval Old Town, which contains several architectural styles! First of all under the influence of the Knights of St. John, and then the Ottomans.

Rhodes Old Town is the largest active medieval town in Europe! Old Town has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site and it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

The Old Town is fortified and surrounded by strong walls with imposing gates and impressive towers, bridges and moats. There are 11 gates to access the Old Town. One of the most representative is Marine Gate was the main entrance to the town from the harbour.

Old town is full of sites testifying about the past including imposing the Palace of the Grand Master, Archaeological and the Byzantine Museum, the Street of the Knights, Clock-tower, Suleiman Mosque, Socrates Street, Hippocrates Square…

The Palace of the Grand Master is a imposing medieval castle with strong walls was a palace, administrative center, and fortress for Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St. John.

You should walk through the streets of the Old Town and enjoy its picturesque narrow stone-paved streets! A special experience and a return to the past is the famous Street of Knights, which looks the same as it did in the medieval time! A mystical atmosphere that will delight everyone!

You should visit the Archaeological Museum wich is housed in the monumental edifice that was the hospital of the Knights of St. John and where you can learn about the rich history of the island!

Mandraki port is one of the sights near the Old Town of Rhodes. The famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, used to be located at the entrance to the harbor at the place of the columns with Deers.

The beautiful scene is enhanced by the Agios Nikolaos fortress with the lighthouse from the 15th century, as well as three picturesque windmills.

Rhodes town has several city beaches, the most popular is Elli beach, which is located on the non-windy side.

In addition to the airport, Rhodes has excellent boat connections with Athens, Crete and neighboring islands.

Tradicional Koskinou

Tradicional Koskinou

The Koskinou village is located about 8 km from the capital of Rhodes.

A traditional and authentic village with picturesque houses and wonderful gates decorated with various details and painted with strong and vibrant colors.

The center of the village is surrounded by narrow winding streets with characteristic stones placed in the middle of the path. All around, greenery and flowers enhance the beautiful ambience!

By chance, on the recommendation of a friend from Karpathos island, I had the opportunity to spend 2 days in this charming village, which delighted me. For every recommendation for those who want to experience a different Rhodes!

Near the village of Koskinou there are excellent beaches Kalitheas and a little further Kalithea Springs and 4 more beautiful beaches!

Rhodes beaches

When you start from Rhodes town in the direction of Lindos, the following beaches follow in order that you must visit! ⤵

Kalitheas beach

Near the Koskinou village is the great Kalitheas beach with golden-yellow sand and turquoise blue sea. Ideal for families because of the shallow water!

An excellent choice for lovers of parties on the beaches, because there is top beach-bar Kalami with cool music and vibe on the beach!

Kalithea Springs

A little further away is the famous Kalithea Springs, a spa with thermal springs known for their healing properties.

Near Kalithea Springs, there are 4 beautiful small bays with picturesque rocky landscapes:

1. Jordan

2. Oasis

3. Tasos

4. Nikolas

Jordan (Kokkini Beach Kallithea)

Jordan Bay stands out with its imposing rocks around and deep crystal clear water. A great choice for diving enthusiasts because of the amazing underwater world.

Tasos beach

Of the next 3 in a row, the first one on the picture, Thasos, stands out. A great beach that is surrounded by interesting rocks around and in the water. The beach is great for swimming and diving!

In one part of the beach there is a shallow lagoon suitable for children to have fun and enjoy. There is a restaurant on the beach after which the beach is named.

After the tourist spot of Faliraki, there are 3 beaches – Ladiko, Anthony Queen & Traganou. I single out the exceptional Anthony Queen & Traganou which are among the most beautiful beaches of Rhodes!

Anthony Queen beach

Anthony Queen is a fantastic bay that proudly is named after the famous actor “Zorba the Greek” who filmed the cult film “The Guns of Navarone” in Rhodes.

The type of beach that is simply adored! A picturesque bay surrounded by high rocks with plenty of greenery and deep emerald water. Lots of interesting scattered rocks around embellish this idyllic landscape! An ideal beach for lovers of swimming and diving!

Traganou beach

A phenomenal beach that is not to be missed when visiting Rhodes! Pebble beach with deep turquoise water is a real hedonistic Paradise for swimming and diving!

Additional flair is provided by the impressive rocks and cave that surround this exceptional beach.

Tsambika Monastery

Tsambika Monastery is located about 25 km south of the city of Rhodes. Lovers of incredible natural landscapes will be delighted by the imposing mountain that rises next to the beach, at the top of which is the marvelous Tsambika monastery surrounded by gorgeous greenery. The monastery is considered the protector of the island with an icon that is miraculous, especially for women with fertillity problems.

From the direction of the monastery, there is a spectacular view of Tsambika beach and the surrounding area, which is breathtaking! Along with Rhodes Old Town and Lindos, Tsambika is the top 3 locations to visit in Rhodes!

Tsambika beach

The real gem of Rhodes is the magnificent long sandy beach with golden-yellow sand and turquoise shallow water. Tsambika is organized and very popular beach. It has many beach-bars and is a excellent choice for lovers of beach parties and water sports. A great choice also for families with children due to the shallow water.

For lovers of the natural environment, the best left part of the beach at the foot of the impressive mountain, where the beautiful Tsambika monastery is located, stands out! The incredible landscape will amaze you with its beauty!
