🎬 Peaceful Tilos

📍 Tilos is a small island that belongs to the Dodecanese and is located between Rhodes and Kos.

✔ Tilos is a hilly island with beautiful landscapes, verdant valleys, steep rocky coasts and interesting and diverse beaches, beautiful places with an authentic atmosphere.

▪️ Island off the beaten tourist trail. An extremely peaceful and a small tourism developed island. Ideal location for a peaceful and quiet vacation! The complete opposite of the nearby very visited islands of Rhodes and Kos!

▪ Great island for hiking on good trails to pristine beaches and island landmarks. The island will conquer all nature lovers!

▪ Inhabited since the early Neolithic period, as evidenced by numerous objects discovered in the Charkadio Cave and located in the Archaeological Museum nearby. The remains of dwarf elephants, the last in Europe that lived on the island until about 4000 years ago, were also discovered on Tilos. Tinos is the habitat of rare birds and has about 400 different species of flowers and herbs, for which it was famous in Antiquity.

▪️ Tilos is the only green island in Greece! All the energy they use on the island comes from renewable sources of the Sun and wind. And the only island in the world where almost all produced waste is recycled. These facts have placed Tilos at the top of the list of visitors who value ecology and nature.

▪ About 750 people live on Tilos. There are 2 places, Livadia port on the southeast side and the capital of Megalo Chorio on the northwest on the mountainside.

Livadia

Livadia is a port and main tourist spot and is located on the southeast side of the island at the foot of the mountains. Livadia is a large bay with a promenade along the sea and offers a wide range of accommodation, taverns and cafes right next to the seashore.

Of the buildings stand out the interesting architecture of the police building, which dates from the period of Italian rule at the beginning of the 20th century.

Mikro Chorio (Ghost Town)

Mikro Chorio is a mystical abandoned settlement located on Tilos!

Mikro Chorio is a settlement built in the 15th century on a hill by the Knights of the Order of St. John. The inhabitants left the place and moved to the Livadia port in the 30s of the 20th century, and it has been completely abandoned since 1960.

The mysterious atmosphere of the place with castle ruins and abandoned stone houses and Byzantine churches gives an incredible impression. A place where silence can be listened to!

You should visit Mikro Chorio in the evening and enjoy the local bar with relaxed music and a unique and slighty spooky atmospherea of the ambiance. 

Monastery Agios Panteleimonas

You should visit the beautiful monastery of Agios Pandeleimonas from the 15th century, which is the protector of the island!

It is located in the northwest of the island on the steep slopes of Profitis Ilias mountain, surrounded by an impressive landscape with green of cypresses and planes and springs of fresh water.

Visitors will be enchanted by the beauty of the monastery and will be impressed by the spectacular view of the surroundings!

Megalo Chorio

Megalo Horio is the capital of Tilos, located 7km north-west of Livadia port.

One of the sights of the island is the medieval castle located on the hill above the capital of Megalo Chorio on the site of the ancient acropolis.

Inside the walls of the castle are the ruins of the remaining buildings as well as the rest of the Archangel Michael church on the site of the ancient temples. The fortress offers a fantastic panoramic view of Tilos and the blue sea.

Only the beach of Livadia port is organized and has beach bars with sunbeds.

Eristos beach

Eristos is the most beautiful and largest beach of Tilos. The beach is located in a large bay about 2.5 km from the Megalo Chorio capital.

The incredible beach with sand and small pebbles and clear emerald water is ideal for swimming and pleasure. The complete impression is provided by the impressive surroundings and the greenery in the background for enjoyment and protection from the Sun!

Hiking & Beaches

Tilos is the right choice for hiking along interesting trails that lead across the island to pristine beaches and island sights. I will mention 2 tracks that left a special impression on me.⤵

➡ The first trail goes from the Livadia port on the northern side of the island by the sea to the great beaches of Kokkini Paralia (Red Beach) and Lethra and continues on to the abandoned settlement of Mikro Chorio.

A demanding trail with a couple of narrow sections that initially go over a cliff. On the way, you pass over the beautiful Strongili beach, accessible only by sea with boats.

Soon the surrounding landscape changes and the surroundings and land turn red in color! Arrival sign above the incredible Kokkini Paralia beach with red sand and pebble! A natural phenomenon that will amaze you as you enjoy surrounded by stunning scenery!

Next comes the great Lethra beach, surrounded by lovely nature and greenery. A real treat for lovers of wonderful ambience and isolation.

➡ The second path leads from the Livadia port to the southeast of the island with the excellent path that goes at a high altitude along the sea. Along the way, you pass over the picturesque Vlihada beach, accessible by boat.

After that, you come above the bay, where you can see a magnificent view that leaves you breathless! A moment to remember for a lifetime!

There is a path that leads down to where are 3 excellent natural beaches shown respectively on the pictures:

2. Despoti Nero

3. Zacharias

The trail continues through a beautiful landscape to the ancient ruins of the Gera settlement.

If you continue along the path, you will reach the extreme south of the island, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view on the small Antitilos island and in the distance the Chalki island. A nice moment for the soul to merge peacefully with the surrounding nature!
